Efficiently extracting energy from cosmological neutrinos
Detecting the extremely low-energy neutrinos that form the Cosmic Neutrino Background (CNB) presents many experimental challenges, but pursuing this elusive goal is still worthwhile because these weakly-interacting particles could provide a new window into the structure and composition of the early universe. This report examines whether cosmological neutrinos can deposit sufficient energy into ...
متن کاملTracing very high energy neutrinos from cosmological distances in ice
Astrophysical sources of ultrahigh energy neutrinos yield tau neutrino fluxes due to neutrino oscillations. We study in detail the contribution of tau neutrinos with energies above 106 GeV relative to the contribution of the other flavors. We consider several different initial neutrino fluxes and include tau neutrino regeneration in transit through the Earth and energy loss of charged leptons. ...
متن کاملHigh Energy Neutrinos from Cosmological Gamma-Ray Burst Fireballs
Observations suggest that g-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced by the dissipation of the kinetic energy of a relativistic fireball. We show that a large fraction, $10%, of the fireball energy is expected to be converted by photomeson production to a burst of ,1014 eV neutrinos. A km2 neutrino detector would observe at least several tens of events per year correlated with GRBs, and test for neutrino...
متن کاملThe Cosmological Energy Density of Neutrinos from Oscillation Measurements
The emerging structure of the neutrino mass matrix, when combined with the primordial element abundances, places the most stringent constraint on the flavor asymmetries in the cosmological neutrino background and therefore its energy density. I review the mechanism of synchronized neutrino oscillations in the an early universe with degenerate (asymmetric) neutrino and antineutrino densities and...
متن کاملTau Neutrinos from Astrophysical and Cosmological Sources
Previous work on the neutrino spectra from high energy sources has not included the tau neutrinos directly produced by the decays in the source. Here we consider the tau neutrino component and discuss how its inclusion modifies the expected neutrino spectra. We discuss implications for interpreting any observed tau neutrino component in TeV UHE events as evidence of νμ → ντ oscillations.
